Why Is My Contact Form Not Sending Emails?

If your website has a contact form, there's a fair chance it's quietly failing you right now — and you wouldn't know. Customers fill it in, hit send, get a polite "thank you"… and the message never reaches you. No error, no warning. Just enquiries, gone.

The 2-minute check

Send yourself a test message from your own form, right now, the way a customer would. Then check two places: your inbox, and your spam folder. No message anywhere? Your form is broken, and it may have been broken for months.

The usual causes

  • It's landing in spam. The most common and the easiest to miss. Form emails often look suspicious to Gmail and Outlook, so they file them under spam — or block them outright.
  • Your website is sending mail it isn't allowed to send. Form emails usually pretend to come from your own email address, and modern mail systems reject that as fake unless your domain is set up to prove the messages are really yours.
  • An update broke the form. Website software updates itself, and forms are one of the first things to quietly stop working afterwards.
  • The messages are going to an old address. Forms are often still pointed at an email set up years ago — sometimes the web designer's, sometimes one nobody checks anymore.
  • Your hosting has stopped sending. Many hosting accounts limit how much mail a website can send, and forms are the first casualty.

What a proper fix looks like

Your form gets set up to send mail the authenticated, provable way, so messages pass the checks instead of failing them. The destination address is confirmed as one you actually read. Then the form is tested end to end — a real test message, arriving in your real inbox — before anyone calls it fixed. A fix that isn't tested isn't a fix.

Can you do it yourself?

Some of it, if you're comfortable inside your website's settings. But if words like "spam filtering" and "mail authentication" already have you reaching for the phone, that's your answer — this is exactly the kind of job that eats a whole Saturday and still doesn't work.
